Julie's reign of terror is now over!... just kidding. [30 Aug 2005|06:51pm]
Welcome to the 2005-2006 schoolyear! With this means that LeTSGAB will be beginning up in a couple weeks. Our new sponsor, Mr. Hovan, is very nice and it seems that he will be a very good person to work with for the organization.

This year, I want to try something different. I liked LeTSGAB in the past, but sometimes I felt that it was too lacking. We continued to lose many members until we were dwindled down to a handle excluding the officers. I don't want this to happen again. I want us to start of strong like we did last year and end strong. What does this mean? We want to hear from YOU. We want your ideas, what you think we should talk about, etc. We're also going to try and do fundraising, something we've been talking about for the past two years. I want this club to be something that we can all look back on one day and be glad to know it was there.

Our first officers meeting will be this Thursday, August 30. We will be determining the calendar then, so further meeting dates are TBA. Check back here in a few days for more updates.

I hope everyone is having a great schoolyear, whether at Roosevelt or not! And for those of you at Roosevelt, I look forward to meeting you at our first meeting.

Your new president says, "Hello!" [20 Apr 2005|07:38pm]
Hi everyone. Today was the last LeTSGAB meeting, and I'd like to announce the winners of the election:

President: Daniel McCarthy
Vice President: Abbie Boyle
Secretary: Katie (don't know her last name, sorry)
Gopher/Secretary: Vicky Rheault

I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me. It's greatly appreciated, and I'm sure the other candidates are also appreciative. We have some exciting announcements now!

1. Mr. Lord will no longer be our sponsor. However, Mr. Hoovan has been nice enough to sponsor us for next year!

2. LeTSGAB members will be playing laser tag next Friday at Laser XP Sport in Laurel. We may ask for you to pitch in a few dollars but we will try to cover it. If you'd like to come, please let Julie or any of the officers know.

3. Youth Pride Day is still this Saturday, rain or shine, so please come if you'd like! Greenbelt Metro, 9:45am. Be there!

This sure feels weird updating as a new position, and soon Katie will be taking over all of these updates, but I just wanted to say thanks again and I sincerely hope that next year will be a good year for all of you heading to college and to those sticking around for LeTSGAB! Have a good summer and I will see you next year!

Day of Silence, Youth Pride Day, et. al. [12 Apr 2005|03:50pm]
So guys, I'm taking the liberty to update to all 2 of you who read this journal! Feel proud all.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 13, 2005, is the Day of Silence. If you would like to participate, see Mr. Lord in T-6 for a "speaking card" or a permission form. Most of us will be dressing in all black and painting our faces white. Sounds like national mime day to me, but whatever. We need people to do it, so please, please do it! +10 cool points are at stake!

Youth Pride Day will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005. We will be arriving at the Greenbelt Metro station at 9:45am. Please bring money for food and metro card and make sure that you drink lots of water and wear sunscreen if it's that hot! Last year it was pretty schorching, so make sure you dress appropriately (plus, we wanna look good in front of your LGBT brothers and sisters, right?)

Nominations for office will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, April 13. Elections for office next year will be held next Wednesday, the 20th. We will be voting on the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer/Gopher (the jobs have been combined, due to some interesting treasurers over the past years). Speak up for who you want to run YOUR club!

The year is winding down, and we will be losing our President and Vice President (Julianne Cyr and Michael McCarthy) to the fate that is college. They will be missed...ha. Sike. Of course they will. But we're ready to take the experiences that they've made and continue to run a successful club. The last meeting date, by the way, will be announced soon.

Happy holidays to all you LeTSGABians! [09 Dec 2004|02:50pm]
Rather than decking the halls with bells of holly, we're instead going to be treating our lovely friends to the wonders of stories, food, and a fun time overall. We usually do this storytelling deal around Halloween, but because of the bi-weekly meetings, things are slightly shaken up. Our next meeting, December 15, 2004, in T-6, we be the last of 2004, and we will start up again after the break. Hope to see you all there!

(By the way, I'm sorry for those who comment and I have yet to respond. I've been quite busy with midterms, finals, and my personal favorite, boy troubles. I'll get around to answering all your comments, I swear!)

Hello to all 2 of you who read this journal! I just wanted to say to please, please come to LeTSGAB's next meeting. We had a good 25 people at our first meeting, and we had about 6 at our last meeting. Although the meeting went well, we need you! Please, bring friends and support the club! Important dates! [12 Sep 2004|06:15pm]
Hi everyone! We've got some important dates for you all:

We had a pre-officer's meeting last Wednesday, and discussed some things, such as a tenative schedule! This year, LeTSGAB will be held bi-weekly. The first officer's meeting is on September 14th, and the first public meeting is on September 22nd. We hope to see all two of you who read this to be there! We're gonna have a lot of fun this year, and we hope you all can join us!

I just received this e-mail minutes ago:

Dear Daniel,

We did it! Just moments ago, the Federal Marriage Amendment lost in the Senate by a stunning, bipartisan vote of 50-48. We won this historic victory for two reasons: First, because the politics of division don't work, and second: the votes were on our side.

But the real reason we won is this: You. You and every fair-minded American, gay or straight, who called, e-mailed, faxed, visited, tracked down, and otherwise urged your Senators not to write discrimination into the Constitution. Thank you. This amazing moment belongs to all of us. Please, share this victory with all the friends and family you talked into fighting with us. We join in celebration with each of you. The campaign to defeat this amendment has been a top priority for HRC and with your amazing efforts over the course of many months, today we won this round of the fight. Thank you - again.

What's next: I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't remind you that it's not over. Our ultra-conservative opponents are determined to spread their discriminatory agenda across the country. Fasten your seatbelts, my friends, because the months ahead are going to be challenging indeed:

Next week, the House will take up the issue of marriage equality as well. Expect a fight. Expect vicious words and fierce debate. And expect to speak up, loud and clear, once more.

During the next three months, no fewer than 11 states - and possibly 13 - are facing ballot initiatives to write discrimination into their state constitutions. HRC will fight these initiatives shoulder to shoulder with state and local GLBT leaders. We'll let you know how you can help.

And of course - like you, we will be actively working to stop discrimination at the source by electing equality-minded legislators around the country. We're glad to know you will be with us in that battle, too.

All of this work starts tomorrow. For today, I will take a moment to appreciate this hard-won victory. I hope you'll join me.

Many, many thanks for all you have done.

Hey guys, this is Daniel McCarthy, your new secretary. Yesterday on the news I saw something very interesting that I thought related to LeTSGAB a lot. Yesterday on FOX 5 News, there was a rally in DC (I believe it was on the mall) about a new law prohibiting gay marriage/civil unions in Virginia, pretty much making them a second class citizen. Apparently this also takes away rights for people to be the beneficiary of the power of attorney and other legal obligations that may be neccessary if a person was injured or killed. I wish I could've been there.

Hope all of you have a wonderful 4th of July and are having a great summer.

this is tomorrow, hope we have lots of people participating!

for more information

April 21, 2004 - Day of Silence
Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today. What are you going to do to end the silence?
